The course examines the historical development and function of Modern Greek theatre criticism from 1900 to 1940, with particular emphasis on the interwar period, during which theatre criticism became firmly established as a distinct field of cultural and intellectual activity. At the same time, the course explores theatre criticism as a broader intellectual phenomenon and a significant component of theatrical practice, analyzing its nature, modes of operation, and relationship with other agents of the theatrical process.
After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
• identify the major stages in the development and function of Modern Greek theatre criticism from 1900 to 1940, with particular emphasis on the interwar period;
• understand the role of theatre criticism as a broader intellectual phenomenon and as a significant component of theatrical practice;
• analyze the nature, functions, and conditions of theatre criticism and its relationship with other participants in the theatrical field.
